Mark Hirsch isn’t trying to assault your senses with his compositions – be they acoustic, electro-acoustic or electronic music, short films, or photography. His work accentuates the in-between, the minutiae of life, the hidden spaces and intricate textures that orchestral bombast can sweep over so effortlessly. Hirsch’s compositions unfold gradually, often taking influence from scientific concepts: fusion processes within stars and relativistic physics, to name a few. But his melodic and harmonic materials are derived intervalically, a modernized adaptation of a style dating back to the composers of the Renaissance.

A composer, guitarist and photo/video artist hailing from the Chicago-land area, Hirsch studies at Lawrence University’s Conservatory of Music under Dr. Asha Srinivasan. He has also studied with Dr. Joanne Metcalf and Dr. John Mayrose.
